Miami-Dade County offers a free bulky waste pickup, and for the right job it’s a genuinely good deal. But it comes with limits that catch a lot of people off guard — caps on how much and how often, a list of things it won’t take, and a scheduling process you have to follow to the letter. Here’s how Miami-Dade bulky waste pickup actually works, where it falls short, and when it’s worth calling a pro instead.
What the County Service Includes
If your home receives Miami-Dade County residential waste collection, you’re entitled to two bulky waste pickups per calendar year, each up to 25 cubic yards. If you’ve got more than one pickup’s worth at once, single-family residents can combine both into a single pickup of up to 50 cubic yards. Accepted items include furniture, appliances, yard trash, crates, and cardboard.
The catch is right there in the numbers: two per year. Use them on a couple of small jobs and you’ve got nothing left when the big cleanout hits.
The Rules That Trip People Up
- You must schedule it first. You can’t just pile things at the curb. Bulky pickup has to be requested in advance through 311 or the county’s website.
- Timing is enforced. Put your pile out more than 3 days before your scheduled date and you’re subject to enforcement — anywhere from a warning to a civil citation. An unscheduled pile is illegal dumping.
- There’s a wait. Pickups are scheduled out, not same-day. If you need it gone this week — before a move, a closing, or a new-furniture delivery — the county calendar may not cooperate.
- It’s for county-serviced homes only. If you live inside a city like Miami, Hialeah, or Coral Gables, your municipality runs its own program with its own rules. Condos and apartment buildings on private collection usually don’t get this service at all.
- Not everything qualifies. Hazardous materials, and items needing special handling like refrigerators with refrigerant or certain electronics, fall outside standard bulky pickup.
When the County Service Is the Right Call
If you own a county-serviced home, you’re not in a hurry, your pile is under the cubic-yard cap, and it’s all accepted material — use it. It’s free, and free is hard to beat. Save it for a planned, non-urgent cleanout.
When to Call a Pro Instead
Professional junk removal earns its cost when the county service can’t help: you’ve used your two pickups, you need it gone now, the load is over the limit, it’s an apartment or condo, or the job includes items the county won’t take.
